Ceramic braces, also known as clear braces, use brackets and wires to gently guide your teeth into the desired alignment. The brackets and wires are used to apply consistent pressure to your teeth, shifting them in your jaw, typically over a time period of about one to two years. Ceramic brackets are the same size and shape as traditional metal brackets, but they are made from transparent, high-strength ceramic materials.

Ceramic braces are used to treat a variety of orthodontic issues, such as misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, irregularly spaced teeth, overbite or underbite. Braces can also be used to help correct jaw alignment issues and TMJ disorders.

Ceramic braces function the same way as traditional metal braces. However, our dentist may offer ceramic braces for patients with mild to moderate orthodontic issues. Our dentist will discuss your options with you during your consultation.

Another difference between ceramic and metal braces is staining, due to their clear or tooth-colored ligatures (the elastics that hold the wire to the brackets) can become discolored. Be sure to avoid dark or highly pigmented foods and beverages. If the ligatures are stained, we can replace them during your next checkup.
